I grew up under strict parents who emphasized academics above all else. I am the oldest of three kids, so I felt a heavy responsibility to be a “model child” for my two younger brothers. I worked myself to be a straight-A student in advanced classes and was an athlete on the high school volleyball team.
My life looked pretty normal on the outside, but on the inside, my adolescent years were full of stress and anxiety that I didn’t know how to manage. I suffered a great deal emotionally, mentally, and physically from expectations that I felt were being placed on me. Looking back, I spent most of my high school years as a high-functioning depressed student—feeling lonely, empty and always comparing myself to others.
It wasn’t until after college that I tried yoga and mindfulness meditations for the first time, and they completely changed my life. I realized that my inner chaos was due to the fact that I had a poor relationship with myself. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know what I wanted. But most importantly, I didn’t know how to love and respect myself. I learned many things in school, but nobody taught me these things!
I felt through my own experience how much our students (our society’s future leaders) need to learn how to be emotionally intelligent and develop a loving relationship with themselves to create a hopeful society. I have since then become a certified yoga and meditation teacher to help those who are currently struggling with the same questions and problems that I once had and wished someone had guided me through.
